Fr Anthony Nwankwo is one of four priests from the religious order the Society of Mary, Mother of Mercy, founded in Nigeria, working in the Diocese of East Anglia. Fr Anthony has been working in Cambridge since 2014 and was appointed to St Mary’s, Great Yarmouth and St Peter the Apostle, Gorleston in 2016 to work as assistant priest to Fr Philip.
Fr Alex Ibe from the same religious order as Fr Anthony joined our parish team in May 2017, he was working in Cambridge before that. The two priests live in St Mary’s as the beginnings of a religious community.
Previous Priest -My name is Mgr Philip Shryane, known to all as Fr Philip.
I grew up in the parish of All Souls in Peterborough and went to seminary at St Mary’s College Oscott. I was ordained on 28th June 1975, the penultimate ordination for the old Diocese of Northampton.
My first posting was to Holy Family Parish, Langley, Slough. The Diocese of East Anglia was formed in 1976 and I requested a move to the new diocese. Since then I have served in St Pancras and St Mary’s parishes Ipswich, Sacred Heart parish in Dereham, St George’s in Norwich and then St Edmund’s, Bury St Edmunds.
I left Bury St Edmunds in September 2014, the Bishop gave me four months sabbatical leave which I spent working in Siem Reap in Cambodia, a parish twinned with St Edmund’s. I returned from Cambodia in January 2015 and moved into St Mary’s, Great Yarmouth, serving St Peter’s, Gorleston a week later. I also serve the Diocese as Vicar for Finance and I help our deaf community by signing Mass for them from time to time.
